Once Upon A Time In America

We had this thing called statesmen.

  1. I could argue, for example, that Sen. Everett Dirksen (IL) was such a man. But there haven't been any others in years.

  2. Excellent point, and all three of them were fighters, in both the literal and metaphorical senses!

  3. Webster and Calhoun represented their regions regarding slavery, with Webster opposed and Calhoun supporting. Calhoun was also the most prominent advocate of states' rights and nullification, while Webster favored a strong federal government. Clay was the closest to a real statesman, being called "the Great Compromiser," whereas Webster and Calhoun were more ideological/partisan. And in these latter days, to seek compromise and to work with the opposition party gets one branded an "In Name Only" (RINO, DINO) and a member of the Swamp.
